The National Institute for Research and Development for Mining Safety and Anti-Explosive Protection – INSEMEX Petroșani is pleased to announce the 12th edition of the International Symposium on Safety and Health at Work – SESAM 2025.

SESAM 2025 will take place at the Aro Palace Hotel in Brașov, Romania, on October 23, 2025. The symposium is organized in collaboration with the University of Petroșani and in partnership with the Romanian Mining Employers’ Association – PATROMIN. The event will be held under the aegis of the National Research Authority and under the high patronage of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences – ASTR.

 INSEMEX Mission

Fundamental and applied research, technological development for the regulated domains, for national public interest on the evaluation and prevention of risks which may occur during the operations performed in the atmospheres with toxic and explosive hazard, including the use of explosives, the environment protection within the areas adversely affected by the mining and the related operations, testing and certification of equipment, training and certification of personnel, rescuing operations and operations related to mine closures, together with the development and the implementation of regulations related to these operation.

SHORT HISTORY

NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN MINE SAFETY AND PROTECTION TO EXPLOSION – INSEMEX PETROSANI was founded in 1949 under the name of Research Station for Mine Safety, as a branch of ICEMIN Bucharest.

Its foundation was determined by the need for solving problems related to safety in the Romanian mining industry. The name under which this institute is known within the mining industry as well as within other industries like the machinery, electro-technical, chemical or oil and gas industry, frames into the tradition developed by its staff in their over 65 years of activity.

INSEMEX activity is conducted in two premises in which the surface designed for research in the 4 pavilions is of about 6000 square meters, and the volume of testing installations consisting of tunnels and experimental galleries exceed 1000 cubic meters.

INSEMEX disposes of a training facility for rescuers, a testing facility for civil use explosives and pyrotechnic articles, located outside Petrosani area, at approximately 5km, and a testing hall for electro-mechanical equipment and installations.

INSEMEX performs its activity within 4 research departments, consisting of 10 specialized research laboratories. 

Innovative research

The institute performs research in order to develop knowledge and technical solutions for prevention, protection and limitation of explosions (very fast burning reactions) generated by air-flammable substances mixtures etc

Department for Safety of Mineral Resources

The activity in the Department for Safety of  Mineral Resources is included in the achievement of scientific research (basic and applied), technology transfer and other specialised services performed under optimal quality conditions with good results in terms of capitalisation possibilities, to ensure and improving occupational health and safety.

Department for Industrial Safety

Department of Industrial Security within NIRD INSEMEX includes two research laboratories, namely laboratory Rescue Hazards and Environmental Laboratory which promote basic and applied research, laboratory tests / experiments and scientific and technological areas.

Department for Safety of Installations, Explosion-Proof Equip.

Department for the Safety of Explosion-Proof Equipment and Installations operates inside of INCD-INSEMEX Petroşani and comprises three laboratories: a laboratory in which are carried research activities regarding electric Ex power equipment; a laboratory in which are carried research activities regarding electric low current equipment; a laboratory in which are carried research activities regarding non-electric Ex equipment, electrostatics and EIP.

Departament of Safety of Explosives and Pyrotechnic Articles – DSEAP – Administrative entity within the INCD INSEMEX Petrosani, in the structure of which there are two specialized laboratories and a certification service: Laboratory for Explosive Materials and Pyrotechnic Articles , LMEAP  Laboratory for Blasting Techniques– LTI Service for Certification of Explosives, Supporting Means and Blasting Techniques – SECEMTI

Department of Informatics, International and Media Relations

The Department of Informatics, International and Media Relations – DIRIMM – is an administrative entity within INCD INSEMEX Petrosani, within which the department’s staff works in three laboratories: Informatics Laboratory Computer Simulations Laboratory International and Media Relations Laboratory

Over 75 years of activity

INCD INSEMEX founded by GD. 1461/18.10.2006 legal person Romanian coordinated by the Ministry of Research and Innovation, performing research and analysis in the field of innovation specific activity, the institute brought recognition not only at regional or nationally but also internationally.
